Thalassophobia is the persistent and intense fear of deep bodies of water such as the sea, oceans, pools, or lakes. Thalassophobia can include fear of being in deep bodies of water, fear of the vast emptiness of the sea, of sea waves, sea creatures, and fear of distance from land.
Thalassophobia is a real thing for me. No matter how many nightmares it causes or adventures I avoid because of it – it will also always intrigue me. Looking at images of creepy large bodies of water gets my heart beating. It is like a love and hate relationship. In fact, I wanted to be an oceanologist for part of my life – but the more fond I grew of water, the more it tore into my mind.
