This illustrations are by Étienne Léopold Trouvelot(1827–1895), a French artist, astronomer and amateur entomologist.

“Amateur entomologist” is quite a fitting title, considering he imported and released the gypsy moth into North America. These moth rascals are an invasive species – and they have resulted in the destruction of millions of hardwood trees throughout the eastern United States!
